Much of San Francisco’s charm is rooted in it’s abundant parks, with over 200 green spaces to enjoy. But what about the neighborhoods where outdoor spaces are replaced by busy streets and high-rise buildings? In areas like the Financial District, SoMa, and Chinatown, San Francisco has found a clever solution:  Privately Owned Public Open Spaces” also known as “POPOS.”

POPOS are thoughtfully designed areas, ranging from open-air plazas to serene rooftop gardens. These spaces are maintained by private developers, but serve a public purpose. They offer a respite from the urban hustle, providing locals and office workers with inviting places to unwind, connect, or simply take a breather. So even in the heart of the city’s densest districts, you can find a slice of tranquility and greenery.

Many of these spots were established thanks to a 1985 law that required private buildings to dedicate some space for public use. This blog is all about rooftops—because let’s face it, they’re the coolest—and we’ve rounded up four of the best. We hope this guide gives you some fresh new lunch spots to check out!
