Take the day off and spend it driving about Highway 1 from San Francisco to the Monterey Peninsula before stopping in Carmel-by-the-Sea before your return to The City. This adventure is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip to see sites you have never seen before and to experience one of the most enticing beaches on the West Coast.
This beachy peninsula was made famous by affluent and influential public figures who would come to the Pebble Beach to vacation - away from the city and relax on the beach. This now busy tourist town, was originally brought to life to home artists and scientists.
Artists made their way over here after the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake to rebuild a broken city with their talents. They opened their first community cultural center in 1907 where actors put on performances for the town.
Scientists found this community interestingly perfect for initiating the Carnegie Institution established the Coastal Laboratory. This caused a number of scientists to move to the area to conduct further research for both wildlife and sea creatures.
